Mel Ott was a professional baseball player who spent his entire 22-year career with the New York Giants. He was born on March 2, 1909 in Gretna, Louisiana and made his major league debut in 1926 at the age of 17. Ott was known for his powerful left-handed swing and his ability to hit for both average and power.
Ott was a 12-time All-Star and won the National League Most Valuable Player award in 1942. He finished his career with 511 home runs, making him the first National League player to reach the 500-home run milestone.
